WINDMILL WOODCUT

And last, but not least, for the Element Air, a "WINDMILL"! We thought of the West and the plains where the slightly undulating flatness is a perfect passageway for gusting swooshes.

The "WINDMILL" (often showing up in our prints these days, like here and here) has surfaced yet again, but here as a subject on its very own. Topped with a rooster weathervane on the tip of a tiger striped log, this "WINDMILL" has the leathery brown, weathered kind of feel that comes from long stretches planted in the great windy gusts of the prairie lands. The air curls circularly about itself as wind, round and round the piece of paper. Both dusty and sunny, friendly and fearsome.

And so, there you have all four of the new "THE FOUR ELEMENTS" woodcuts! "CLOD" (Earth), "FIREPIT" (Fire), "AQUIFER" (Water) and "WINDMILL" (Air, this post). The prints are available only as a set, but at a bargain of a price and a mighty fine grouping, we think. Sets are grouped by edition number (so, for instance all #34's are together). Edition size is 100.

CLOD WOODCUT

"CLOD" (as in a clod of dirt) is Earth in our new woodcut set, "THE FOUR ELEMENTS".

"CLOD" is a lush, thriving clump of dirt and plant in jewel-toned ruby reds and emerald greens. The glow of the sun on the leaves of fanciful trees, the crumbling dirt at it's tapered base, snaking tendrils of leafy vine…a small arrangement of parts all together representing a whole (and yes, there is some ikebana inspiration, too!). Earth!

AQUIFER WOODCUT

The "AQUIFER" woodcut! When we began this print back in August, we began the entire "THE FOUR ELEMENTS" series. Our ideas for what each element would be changed quite a bit during the project…

The "AQUIFER" represents the element 'Water'. Fat blue raindrops plunk down through the sky, soak into the vibrant green earth, seep around stone, and trickle out as crystal clear waterfalls. An old well dips its long rope into the recess and retrieves a bountiful, dripping bucket.

Just one of four prints making up "THE FOUR ELEMENTS" woodcut set. See them all & purchase in our online shop! Prints are packaged in sets by edition number (So, for instance, all #36's are grouped together into one set). The set of 4 is $200.

FIREPIT WOODCUT

The finished "FIREPIT" print! A 12" x 10.5" color woodcut print on Ivory Somerset Paper (printed from 2 blocks). Part of a new 4 woodcut set, "THE FOUR ELEMENTS"

The red hot coals of this masterly stoked "FIREPIT" cast a deep orange glow. Smoke tendrils ribbon and wisp upwards from the flames. Skewered mushrooms and onions sizzle and crispen while a lidded iron cook pot simmers in the flame tips. Aromas from the feast mix with trails of twirling smoke. Rich blue harkens evening, dusklight a rainbow of orange to pink to blue.
