"DESERT ISLAND" BLOCK #1

Printing the first run on the "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut edition. Limited edition of 50 prints, sized 22" x 38" with 1" white paper border around printed image. 

TA-DA! "DESERT ISLAND"!

The 22" tall by 38" wide "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut, just finished! This one's been a long time in the making, a lot of head scratching on the color blocks and proofing…now it looks just like we hoped it would! (*sigh of relief*)

Printed from 3 blocks, 6 total colors in multiple blend rolls & only one shop roller big enough to span the block. We admit it it took us a bit longer than we could ever have projected. But, the end product, we think, was well worth the wait!

"DESERT ISLAND" is not your typical tropical island. A no man's land built of refuse (yes, we were thinking about the pacific trash gyre) from which life slowly springs. The "DESERT ISLAND" imagines wastefulness with the comic spin of the classic stranded at sea story…should any shipwrecked MacGyver find themselves on this isle, surely there are bits and pieces to construct some useful solution. Look closely at those piles for any number of helpful treasures!

THIS BLOCK + THAT BLOCK + ONE MORE

We are in the midst of tackling the color for the "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut now, experimenting with layers & layers of pastel color combinations. Deciding what we want the color to lend to the linework we've been developing in the blocks is a big task!

Anyway, at 20" x 35",  the "DESERT ISLAND" print is really quite large. We are reminded of this every time we heave-ho the blocks onto the press bed (there are 3 total, one's not pictured here) and register the long scroll-like sheets of paper. The edition will be small in the end, like 50 prints. We're leaving the pre-order up until we get that first proof photographed. Then the price will probably nearly double.

What to expect? Paradise color! 

"DESERT ISLAND" COLOR CARVING

The first color block for the "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut is carved! Top shot up there is Paul's celebratory woodscrap weaving. Shots below that are as carving was beginning. This block will be rolled up with some pastel sea & sky colors to print behind the key block (below) and one other color block. Final size will be 20" tall x 35" wide. Hoping to have it all wrapped up by the time we have a show for the BRAVE NEW WORLD woodcuts at THE ARM in Brooklyn on November 7th. Opening's at 7pm, so mark your calendars & come if you can NYC!

COLORING "DESERT ISLAND"

Almost finished drawing in the details for the big color block to finish the "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut edition. Check our flickr for more photos of the process later today! This print will be 20" x 35" (horizonally as long as "THE MOON" woodcut is tall!), which is quite large, really.  We're drawing here in a blueish green ink, but the printed color might be quite different from that. This will be printed as a multi-colored rainbow roll behind the key detail. With paradise-y colors!

Prints in the "DESERT ISLAND" edition are currently available at an intro pre-order, but this earlybird reduced offer will expire when the edition is close to complete. So, order soon for a really good deal & stay tuned for more progress later this week!

"DESERT ISLAND" PRE-ORDER IS UP!

Last week we transferred the "DESERT ISLAND" key block to the color blocks, which are now being drawn in with the color info! In the transferring process, we printed some proofs of the key, one of which we tore down to size (pictured top) to show the final scale of the finished print. Which is still pretty hard to communicate in a photograph…so we included a few closer up shots to help!

"DESERT ISLAND" will be a color print, roughly 20"x 35". The color will print bleed off the edges of the paper. Other prints of ours that print bleed? Three outta four of "THE FOUR ELEMENTS" and "THE MOON".

We're a little behind in updating the blog with process pictures of "DESERT ISLAND", our latest woodcut (currently in the works), so here goes! A big catch-up jumble of photos from carving to inking to the very latest, now up on our flickr, the first proof on newsprint!

"DESERT ISLAND", as with many of our larger scale prints in progress (and this one will be roughly 20" x 35"), is now available for introductory pre-order! 

Pre-ordering is a gamble on the part of the buyer, since colors haven't decided and there is a leap of faith in our final choices required, but if you like what we do and have faith that we'll do it nice, you can get your very own copy of "DESERT ISLAND" at a nicely reduced price!

A lost at sea scene of discarded bounty. Though a desert island would suggest a lack of amenities, this island is brimming with them! A castaways paradise of knick knacks for refashioning. A wonderance of excess becomes a shred of hope scenerio.

And, yes! There will be color, too!
