DIY: A REVOLUTION IN HANDICRAFTS

A few of the photos we took of the Society for Contemporary Craft's exhibition DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts. Our "America the Beautiful" woodcut print was in the show ~ along with all 5 color blocks we hand-drew, hand-carved and printed to make the final image. More images from our visit to the SCC can be view on our flickr!

DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts
Society for Contemporary Craft
Pittsburgh, PA

September 10 - March 26, 2011

This major exhibition includes works by 16 contemporary artists from the US, Canada, and England and explores issues relating to politics, environmentalism, community and a redefining of a producer/consumer relationship. Through this organization-wide exhibition—presented in the main galleries, SCC’s alternative exhibition space EAT: An Art Space About Food, the Studio, and the Store—audiences can better understand the DIY movement, what it represents, and who is making it happen.

Evolving out of the need for cost-saving lifestyles, DIY (or “Do It Yourself”) emerged in the US as a concept in the 1950s, took root as a definitive subculture in urban centers during the 1970s and could be identified as an international movement
by the 1990s. DIY and indie-craft has evolved and matured over the past decade with little crossover into or support from the established craft world. While still at the margins of the mainstream contemporary craft field, DIY represents a young audience, new energy, and a potential future direction for the field. Essential elements of this movement are through its association with social and political commentary, while at the same time emphasizing the development of strong, local communities, and environmentally responsible living.

Beginning the cutting on the 24" x 32" light blue block for "America the Beautiful." Just one more block to cut after this one and we can start proofing. Yay!

Just as a brief FYI, this print is currently available for pre-order on our website. The price will go up when we wrap up the color printing and replace the black + white stand-in proof with a picture of the finished, full color print! So, if you're looking for a whopper of a deal, there's about a week or so left to order this print at the pre-order rate.

Just starting the cut on the yellow block.

Detail of the shadows of the East Coast drawn in on the dark blue block (full picture of drawing finished on the block below). Lots of cutting to do!

More of "America"

A detail of the light blue color block for "America the Beautiful" (above) and the entire block set as they have progressed (below). Drawn color will not be the actual color of the ink...for instance, the yellow ochre on the block below will be printed in a golden, much brighter yellow.

Together all of the blocks will make orange, yellow, light green, dark green, a lilac-y purple, brown, red, royal blue, light blue, dark purple and coral. The black block will be printed overtop of all the colors.

"America the Beautiful" in Black + White

We finished cutting, ran 3 proofs and put the best in this frame for the Manifest Hope show--all within a 2 hour span before the Fed Ex closed. Ack! We made it with very few moments to spare!

Though we had seriously hoped that we would have time to have the color print done for the show...we have learned a lot about what we are physically capable of handling in woodcut with 2 week deadline. The full color edition is available pre-order right now on our website as we work to print the edition over the next 6-8 weeks. The price will leap from the pre-order price when we have the juicy color version up.

"America the Beautiful" matted + ready to go into her frame. Excuse the washed out pics, we were working like trolls in our basement.

Finishing the text "America the Beautiful" in the eagle's banner...

Detail of Hawaii and twirled flag across the bottom of the image.

The eagle!

Almost finished cutting...you can still see traces of the red we drew into the flags...

Close up of South East US and Nashville...

More drawing, more cutting...working in shifts...

"America the Beautiful" for Manifest Hope DC

We were absolutely thrilled and honored to be invited to show in the MANIFEST HOPE DC exhibition that took place January 17-19, 2009 in DC. We decided to funnel that patriotic enthusiasm into a new print "America the Beautiful" for the exhibition. The pictures below show the development of this latest woodcut over the first week working on it. We finished the block in a 2 week window before the opening of the show--working alternating drawing + cutting in shifts all hours of the day. Whew!

We are currently offering "America the Beautiful" at a pre-order rate on our website until the color production is finished.

Though "America the Beautiful" in the MANIFEST HOPE show was hung as a proof in black + white, this print will be editioned in full color. See the flag banner work above for an idea of what we are thinking our color will be like...

Valerie drawing on the block.

Filling in the East Coast...

Sketching in the mainland...

We first drew in the country outlines by hand and then reversed the drawing that we made.
