I (Valerie) finished this block a while back, and had been waiting for our big press move to print & release it... (we built a studio over the summer in our backyard, and are gearing up for a big production switch)...but I couldn't wait any longer, the need to make was too great, so I'm sharing pics of the block today & the print will be released in this Friday's newsletter!
"YOUNG PINES" is a one color woodcut print to be published on natural kitakata paper. Two young trees with boughs tenderly intertwined.

Carving on the 2nd blue block and final color block for the upcoming "OVERLOOK" woodcut has begun! A dense forest to carve through, but this block will add a secondary green tone to the printed image, along with shadow/depth between vertical landscape layers in the print as a whole. (A couple details of the 2nd blue block in progress above) Exciting!
Once carved, we'll finally be able to see the first real glimpses of our vision for the "OVERLOOK" color woodcut print taking shape. The print, which is designed to be both a singular vertical artwork or an infinitely expandable horizontal landscape diptych/triptych/installation, will be lush with color and pattern beyond anything we've ever made.
We have tried our best to document the work on this print, but no number of photos can do it proper justice! It's difficult to communicate both the intricacy & scale. We've collected the best into this photoset.

The blue block is drawn in and we're already fast at the carving of it and the others, so excited & eager to finish so we can start proofing the "OVERLOOK"!
Getting there! This is the most intense of all of the color blocks (1 of 4 total) for the "OVERLOOK" woodcut. Once this block drawing is finished, we'll begin carving all four color blocks. Hoping to start proofing & printing this March (2015)!
The "COMMUNITY" woodcut, a 16" x 20" view of an imagined neighborhood & surrounding greenspaces. Probably one of the most intricate prints we've carved to date, full of charming small detail work! Little tiny shingles, little tiny logs! A pleasant mixing of urban & rural. Printed from 4 hand-drawn, hand-carved woodblocks by the two of us.

After years of planning and drawing and months of carving, the "OVERLOOK" key block is now carved in full! We will be pulling a couple B&W proofs in the next week as we transfer this image to color blocks (printing the block to newsprint, then printing the still inky newsprint onto new wood). And then the process of building color begins!
The "OVERLOOK" landscape will start to take on more dimension as we are able to sculpt the key drawing with shadow and color and light. We are very excited! This has been a momentous project, showing us new ways of working together (even after 7 years of collaboration) and really allowing us to stretch our conceptions of what it is possible for us to make.
This print will have 4 color blocks. As the natural world is rich with vibrant color at its most glorious vantages, so we hope to affect the "OVERLOOK". Forests, trees, leaves in ranges of rich green; fields of golden flecked grasses; the gentle fade to pastel that happens as one looks out across a great expanse. Oh, the wonderment of diverse & beautiful living systems at work in the outdoors!
There is much still to do until the print is officially completed, but we wanted to remind you all again that the "OVERLOOK" has just a few more days of earlybird pre-order!

Round the clock, night & day, carving the 28" x 46"+ new block in progress. The "OVERLOOK" will be a full color print, our most ambitious project yet. Almost done carving on the key block & then onto the color!
The elaborate detailing of the "OVERLOOK" woodcut, 2 years in the making so far. We've been drawing & carving on this block as we worked on many other prints over the past couple years, and are so excited to be nearing completion on this key block!
The "OVERLOOK" print will be a color print, sized approximately 28" x 46". It will probably be a bleed print, with the image spilling off the edges of the paper (like "THE MOON"). The sky, to be drawn and carved only in the color blocks, will add additional height to the finished vertical print.
